Frequently Asked Questions on Google Tag Manager GTM Tracking Code and ID

What is a GTM Tracking Code?

The GTM Tracking Code is a snippet of JavaScript that you add to your website to enable Google Tag Manager functionality. It allows GTM to deploy and manage various marketing and analytics tags on your site.

Can I use multiple GTM containers on one website?

While it's technically possible to use multiple GTM containers on one website, it's generally not recommended as it can lead to conflicts and performance issues which can negatively impact page speed and make troubleshooting more difficult. It's best to use a single container per website.

How does GTM Tracking Code affect website performance?

The GTM Tracking Code itself is designed to have minimal impact on website performance. GTM loads asynchronously, meaning it doesn't block other elements from loading. The base code is also lightweight and optimized for quick loading.

However, the actual impact on performance depends on how you use GTM. For instance, more tags, complex configurations, and poorly configured triggers may increase load time or cause unnecessary tag firings, which can impact performance.

How do I verify if my GTM Tracking Code is working correctly?

You can use the Preview and Debug mode in GTM to check if your container is loading correctly. Additionally, you can use browser extensions like the Google Tag Assistant to verify the implementation.
