Top 51 Startup Accelerators & Incubators in India

India is now the 3rd largest startup ecosystem in the world with over 61,400 startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). In the same survey, it is reported that each of the 555 districts in India produced at least one new startup. Whilst the startup scene is undoubtedly vibrant, this also goes to say that competition is rife. Starting up is half the battle, and it requires more than grit to survive and thrive. Coming in to assist startups are incubators and accelerators, equipping entrepreneurs with the skills, resources, and networks they need to compete in such a crowded market.

In this article, we have compiled a comprehensive list of all incubator and accelerator programs in India, along with a short overview of their programs so you can decide which ones are most suitable for you. The incubators and accelerators in this list have been subdivided into applicability for startups in their 'ideation', 'launch', or 'growth' stages.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STARTUP INCUBATOR AND AN ACCELERATOR?

While many people understood startup accelerators and incubators as one and the same, there are actually several key differences between them.

An incubator's main purpose is to create an optimal environment for startups in their early ages to grow and flourish. Incubators support the development of ventures from mere ideas into functional prototypes, minimum viable products, and foundational business plans. This ideation process takes an indefinite amount of time, so incubator programs tend to be open-ended with no set timeframe. Incubatees may even stay up to years within an incubator.

A common yet unique offering of incubators is also the shared coworking space that houses other yet-to-be-launched businesses. In this space, entrepreneurs may brainstorm with other founders and participate in mentoring and workshop programs to flesh out the details of their businesses. As such, incubators are most suitable for young businesses still at the ideation stage who are developing their primary vision, business plan, and technological capabilities.

Unlike incubators, an accelerator's objective is not to build a long-term business environment, but to get your company up and running quickly and accelerate your growth. Accelerators work on a predefined timeline and offer intensive learning, structured guidance, and mentorship to condense years' worth of learning by doing it into a short period of time, usually within weeks. This implies a large focus on metrics and results; startups must demonstrate their ability in setting and meeting predetermined growth objectives at the end of the program. To help achieve this, funding is usually offered by the accelerators to help startups kickstart their growth, requiring a larger amount of equity in exchange.

Another benefit of startup accelerators is also access to their wider network of investors, venture capitalists, angel investors, and corporate partners. With that being said, startup accelerators have a stricter and more competitive application procedure. In order to apply, a common prerequisite is for startups to have an MVP or can demonstrate some initial traction. As such, accelerators are most suitable for startups that can already demonstrate a high-growth potential and are ready to launch, commercialize, and expand nationally and internationally.

In the end, whether you join an incubator or accelerator depends on what you want to achieve and the terms you'd like to receive. Think about the goals, priorities, and needs of your startup right now, and you should be able to find an incubator and accelerator that can help you sort it out.
