Common questions about archived chats in ChatGPT.
Archiving a chat removes it from your sidebar without deleting it. The conversation and all its content are fully preserved — it just no longer appears in your main chat list. Archived chats are stored indefinitely and can be unarchived and continued at any time. It's useful for keeping your sidebar tidy without losing old conversations.
To archive a chat, hover over it in the sidebar and click the three-dot menu (⋯) that appears, then select Archive. The conversation disappears from the sidebar immediately but is safely stored in the Archived Chats section of Settings → Data controls, where you can retrieve it any time.
Yes. Archiving hides the chat from your sidebar but keeps all content intact and retrievable. Deleting permanently removes the conversation — it cannot be recovered. If you are unsure whether you will need a conversation again, archive it rather than delete it.
Inside the Archived Chats manager (Settings → Data controls → Manage), chats are listed with their titles and dates. You can scroll through the list to find the one you need. To search within an archived conversation's content, first unarchive it so it reappears in the sidebar, then use the sidebar search function.
Once unarchived, the conversation reappears in your main sidebar just as it was — all messages, context, and history are fully restored. You can continue the conversation, share it, rename it, or re-archive it again at any time. The unarchive action is instant and does not require a page refresh.
Yes. In the Archived Chats manager there is a Delete all option that removes every archived conversation permanently in one action. Use this with caution — deleted chats cannot be recovered. If you only want to clear some chats, open each one individually and use the delete option for that specific conversation rather than the bulk delete.
