Common questions about removing a payment method from Google Ads.
No. Google Ads requires at least one valid payment method on any active account. If the card you want to remove is the only one, you must first add a new payment method, then remove the old card. Alternatively, if you no longer need the account, you can cancel it entirely via Admin → Account Settings → Account Status.
Removing a card won't stop campaigns as long as another valid payment method remains on the account. However, if you remove the card and no replacement is added, Google Ads may pause your campaigns due to a billing issue. Always ensure a backup payment method is in place before removing the primary card.
Cancelling your account does not erase any outstanding balance. Google will charge any remaining balance to the payment method on file. You'll receive a final invoice, and your account data will remain accessible for a period after cancellation in case you need to review historical performance.
Yes. You can reactivate a cancelled Google Ads account by returning to Admin → Account Settings → Account Status and changing the status back to active. You will need to ensure a valid payment method is on file. Your previous campaigns and settings should still be accessible after reactivation.
Go to Billing → Payment methods and click Add payment method. You can add a credit card, debit card, or bank account depending on your country. Once the new payment method is verified and set as primary, you can then safely remove the old card.
Pausing stops your campaigns from running but keeps your account, payment methods, and data intact — you can resume at any time. Cancelling deactivates the entire account and stops all billing. Pausing is preferable if you plan to return to advertising; cancellation is better if you no longer need the account at all.
